The Pathways Within Roads to Reading Initiative donates books to literacy programs in small and rural low-income communities. Maximum award: 200 books appropriate for readers age 0 to young adult; English only

Eligibility: 501(c)(3) organizations that run school, after-school, summer, community, day-care, and library reading and literacy programs; must have an annual operating budget of less than $95,000 (schools and libraries are exempt from this budget requirement) and be located in an under-served community with a population of less than 50,000

The PBS Teacher Innovator Awards recognize innovative PreK-12 classroom educators, media specialists, technology coordinators, and home-school educators who use digital media to enhance student learning. Entrants submit a short video or PDF with text and images that showcases their work. Entries can be a demonstration of a unique teaching technique or the outcome of influence on a student work.

Maximum award: all-paid, week-long “Innovation Immersion Experience” at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan in August 2013; free professional development from PBS TeacherLine.

Eligibility: preK-12 classroom educators (public, private, or charter school), library media specialists, technology specialists/coordinators, home-school educators, and Head Start or licensed daycare teachers.

Deadline: December 12, 2012.

The Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers provides selected K–12 teachers in their first five years of teaching with funds to attend the annual National Conference on Science Education. Award recipients will be mentored, tracked, and provided with continuing opportunities for meaningful involvement with NSTA and its activities.

Maximum award: up to $1,000 to be used to attend the annual National Conference; recipients will be invited to attend a variety of workshops and presentations that are of particular interest to new teachers at the annual National Conference.

Eligibility: teachers within the first five years full-time teaching at the time of application who are NSTA members in good standing; to the extent possible, recipients must have been a student member of NSTA as a pre-service teacher.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award recognizes the accomplishments of exceptional public, school, college, community college, or university librarians.

Maximum award: $5,000, a plaque, and $500 travel stipend to attend an awards reception in New York hosted by The New York Times.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program selects high-achieving youth in the Unites States with financial need and provides them, throughout their high school years, with individualized educational services that enable them to develop their talents and abilities.

Maximum award: funding and support services.

Eligibility: applicants must be in the 7th grade when they apply and able to demonstrate financial need.

The Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching program sends highly accomplished primary and secondary teachers from the U.S. abroad and brings international teachers to the U.S for a three to six month long program.

Participating countries in 2012-2013 are: Argentina, Finland, India, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Maximum award: Program costs such as tuition, room and board, and transportation are covered by the grant; participants will receive a maintenance allowance designed to assist with the costs of food and lodging during the program. Distinguished Teachers will also have the opportunity to apply for professional development funds to support development and research, or cover the expenses of attending a conference or workshop related to their fields of teaching expertise.

Eligibility (for U.S. applicants): U.S. citizens who are employed full-time at an accredited school in the U.S. or its territories, hold a Master’s degree (or be enrolled in a Master’s program at the time the grant begins), and are in at least the fifth year of full-time teaching.

Deadline: December 15, 2011.

A notification we received from our friends at E-School News about a great opportunity for high school students:

“Cathay Pacific is sponsoring students aged between 16 and 18 from all around the world to participate in the new Cathay Pacific Green Explorer program. The eight-day program will take place in Hong Kong and Sichuan, China from August 13-20, 2011. Maximum award: flights to and from, travel, food, and accommodation during an eight-day program in Yingjing County, China. Eligibility: residents of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, South Africa, Germany, United States and Canada who are full-time students between 16 to 18 years old (as of June 1, 2011), proficient in written and spoken English, with previous voluntary or community service experience. Deadline: June 17, 2011.”
